As an advocate for those that need the specific attention of special education, maybe now is the time to do that advocating yourself and get paid for it. This list of the top 45 online master’s degrees in special education is designed to show you which programs balance your dedication and skill against the realities of tight schedules and concerns about affordability. Most of the schools on this list of the top 45 online master’s degree in special education require some in-person training, though the majority of the coursework and conferences will likely be done virtually.
Because of the recent trends toward a professionalization of support staff, you may be interested in that path rather than teaching your own classes. Also lately nonprofit colleges and universities have rapidly developed their distance-learning pedagogy that has been building consensus quietly for twenty years but only recently stopped having the old stigma attached to distance learning. No asterisk attaches to the diploma indicating online coursework. These are considered not only equal to traditional graduate school, but the schools listed below also have developed special, parallel, and thoughtful online pedagogy for busy, professional, adult learners, in particular.
Do you need licensure? Probably. The list below prefers those that grant licensure or get you as fully prepared as possible to teach gifted students, students with disabilities, students who are on the spectrum, and/or have second language learning issues.
Of course, you most likely got into teaching because of the rewards and benefits that go beyond pay, but for the online master of special education, you must have your career goals in mind. These goals include: timely completion of the degree, attention to student needs, proper advising and other services. We compiled this list of the top 45 master’s degrees in special education online with an eye towards affordability, accreditation, and national standing. Our grading scheme is broken down below.
